With the recent release of the 2023 Annual Report, we’re taking a look back at last year’s activities and impact. In 2023, AMEL continued its mission of empowering young leaders from the Middle East and Africa (MEA) so that they can better build inclusive, resilient societies. Through AMEL Institute’s 2023 programs, activists across the MEA region learned about critical topics, honed their skills and connected with peers from all over the region. Through the Sudan Democracy Action Project, AMEL played a crucial role in building the knowledge, skills and safety of young Sudanese, including refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The impact was undeniable, with powerful testimonials from participants and a growing alumni network. AMEL’s efforts also extended to global spaces in 2023, with briefings and issue education on human rights, peace and democracy in a number of international power centers.
Among the 2023 Milestones were:
Doubled AMEL Institute’s offerings, adding a Spring program in addition to the annual Summer program.
Trained 409 civic activists from dozens of countries across the MEA region through the Spring and Summer programs.
Launched a secure platform for the Alumni community, which numbers 900+ from across Africa, the Middle East and the Global North.
Trained 300+ Sudanese changemakers in human rights, rule of law, and peace through the Sudan Democracy Action Project.
Provided critical support to 500+ at-risk activists and minorities during the early days of the conflict in Sudan.
Selected as 1 of 26 winners of the UNHCR Refugee Innovation Fund for our Sudan Democracy Action mental health support initiative.
